Bulk vs. bagged mulch
One cubic yard equals 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet. Bulk mulch commonly costs $30 to $60 per yard plus delivery, while the same volume in bags usually costs substantially more, so the crossover is around two to three yards.
Bags win when you have no place to dump a pile, need to carry mulch through a house or gate, or want a small top-up on an existing bed.
How much extra should I order?
Always order a little extra. A 5% waste factor suits simple, square projects; 10% is right for most jobs; bump it to 15–20% for irregular shapes, diagonal patterns, or uneven ground. Running short almost always costs more than the leftover material.

Volume (cu ft) = area × depth ÷ 12. Cubic yards = cu ft ÷ 27. Waste-adjusted = volume × (1 + waste%).
