What drives asphalt cost?
Hot mix typically runs $100 to $200 per ton delivered, and installed residential driveways commonly land between $3 and $7 per square foot including base preparation and paving labour.
Depth is the biggest lever: residential driveways usually get 2 to 3 in of compacted asphalt over 4 to 8 in of aggregate base, while anything carrying trucks needs more of both.
How much extra should I order?
Always order a little extra. A 5% waste factor suits simple, square projects; 10% is right for most jobs; bump it to 15–20% for irregular shapes, diagonal patterns, or uneven ground. Running short almost always costs more than the leftover material.

Volume (cu ft) = area × depth ÷ 12. Cubic yards = cu ft ÷ 27. Waste-adjusted = volume × (1 + waste%).
