How Much Concrete Do I Need?
To find how much concrete you need, multiply length × width × thickness, convert to cubic yards, then add 5–10% for waste.
The formula
Volume in cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (in) ÷ 12.
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Concrete is ordered and priced by the cubic yard.
Worked example
For a 10 ft × 12 ft slab at 4 inches thick: 10 × 12 × (4 ÷ 12) = 40 cubic feet.
40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cubic yards. With 10% waste, order about 1.63 cubic yards.
How much extra to order
Add 5% for simple slabs on level ground, 10% for typical jobs, and up to 15% when the subgrade is uneven or the forms are complex.
Running short mid-pour means a cold joint, so it is always safer to round up.
FAQs
- How many cubic yards is a 10x10 slab?
- A 10×10 slab at 4 inches thick is about 1.23 cubic yards before waste.
- Should I order ready-mix or bags?
- Use bags for small jobs under about half a yard; order ready-mix for larger pours.
