How many gallons is my pool?
For a rectangular pool, multiply length × width × average depth in feet, then multiply by 7.48 to convert cubic feet to gallons. A 32 × 16 ft pool averaging 5 ft deep holds about 19,150 gallons.
For a round pool, use the diameter as the length. The formula becomes radius² × 3.1416 × average depth × 7.48. A 24 ft round above-ground pool at 4 ft deep holds roughly 13,600 gallons.
Why pool volume matters
Chlorine, shock, algaecide, and pH adjusters are all dosed per 10,000 gallons. Guessing low underdoses and invites algae; guessing high wastes chemicals and can damage liners and equipment.
Volume also drives pump sizing: most residential pools should turn over their full volume every 8 to 12 hours, so a 19,000 gallon pool needs a pump moving about 26 to 40 gallons per minute.
